Last Songs of Winter

Here I Am 05:26
After all is said and done All the battles lost and won The aching in my heart All the things that fall apart The moon is on the rise Shattering the skies The pounding in my heart All the things about to start Here I am Here I am Here I am All the words lying still unsaid All the songs still in my head The birds that fly above All the things I’m thinking of Here I am Here I am Here I am Oh I’m alive And the world is with me And I’m singing for you Oh and the light Is drilling through me And singing through I’m alive I’m alive I’m alive Here I am Here I am Here I am

Hide and Go seek Come out wherever Whatever you are Darkness Quiet Time to arrive to get found While the snow’s around Yesterday is gone Show me Slowly Light’s on the rise On the tide tonight Something’s coming Our house This house Quiet as a church mouse The train took yesterday away Yesterday is gone Hide and Go seek Come out wherever Whatever you are Slowly Show me Light’s on the rise On the tide tonight Spring is coming soon Spring is coming

Kiss me goodnight and say my prayers Leave the light on at the top of the stairs Tell me the names of the stars up in the sky Tree taps on the windowpane That feeling smothers me again Daddy is it true that we all have to die? At the top of the stairs is darkness At the top of the stairs is darkness Close my eyes and when I looked Your name was in the memorial book What had become of all the things we’d planned? I accepted the commiserations Of all your friends and your relations But there’s some things I still don’t understand You were so tall How could you fall? Some photographs of a summer’s day A little boy’s lifetime away Is all I’ve left of everything we’ve done Like a pale moon in a sunny sky Death gazes down as I pass by Reminding me that I’m but my father’s son I offer up to you This tribute I offer up to you This tank park salute
4.
My friend Don’t lose your mind Darkness Lasts but a time So hold on, here comes A little song Called darkest, darkest Darkest before dawn I know, I know Life isn’t fair I love, but I love You anyway And darkness, sweet darkness Don’t be afraid For darkness is just Another word for shade My friend, my friend Don’t lose your mind I know life can Be so unkind But hold on, just hold on It won’t be long ‘Cause it’s darkest, darkest Before the dawn Darkest, darkest Before the dawn It’s darkest Darkest Before the dawn
5.
Now it’s time to say goodbye To the one you were, to the words that cried Inside it’s time you know it’s time to go Now it’s time to bid farewell To all the things you did and you knew so well But it’s in the past, it’s dead it’s time, let go Now it’s time to reach into All the things that hurt you’ve been holding on to An old hairshirt you thought you couldn’t shed Now’s the time that you always knew Would come circling round and fly back to you As you lay awake drowning in your bed Now it’s time to say thank you For the things you did and you didn’t do For the life you’ve lived You did the best you knew Now it’s time to make that break Between was and is and what makes you take Your time and shake the earth that sticks to you Now it’s time Now it’s time to say goodbye To the one you were to the words that died Inside it’s time You know it’s time to go Now it’s time to say hello To the one you are that you barely know Hello hello hello c’mon let go C’mon let’s go Gonna hit the road It’s time to hit the road I’ve got my life to live, I’ve got my gifts to give I’ve got my love for you, I’ve got my things to do So let’s go… we’re gonna hit the road… Time to hit the road…

about

After the end, before the beginning. A short, acoustic song cycle born in those in-between places — between the old darkness and the new light that's yet to appear. We’ve all been there.

Some solo, some with instruments like hammer dulcimer, vibraphone, quinton, banjo, double bass, and a single kick drum. Also featuring a cover of Billy Bragg’s most poignant song, “Tank Park Salute.”

Dedicated to my mother, Anne, and my father, George, who left their marks in ways I am still discovering.

Marc Farre Sebastopol, California

“In the company of European-influenced musicians like Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, and Nick Cave. A throaty voice, highly poetic lyrics and a kinetic band behind him. Compelling.”
